I am offering another Small Sculpture Clay class series.  This time we will tackle the human form of an Angel.

Inspiration

Some people might look at my work and see spiritual components.  It’s true, my work is inspirational.   I tend to be attracted to church buildings and mission architecture, biblical symbolism’s and christian culture, crosses, angels and scripture.  But even nature is spiritual to me.  I have always enjoyed outdoors, trees, clouds, gardens, birds, animals.  I like God’s creatures that represent courage like a lion or, peace like a dove, butterflies – metamorphosis or a cat or dog for comfort and companionship.  It’s all inter-connected.

I know the stories of the bible. I like reading them over and over again. It is history and very fascinating. But I sometimes use those stories subtly in my work.  It could be as apparent as an angel or a tiny detail that  easily passes by the readers eyes, such as the purpose of pomegranates in art. (Pomegranates represent many aspirations such as fruitfulness, growth, prosperity, etc.)

 

Most of you know I make a lot of pomegranate art.  I make pomegranate  ornaments, spoon rests, or sculptured with birds, to name a few.  I have always been obsessed with them because I just think they are one of the most beautiful fruit on earth. They remind me of tiny garnet like jewels inside the casing.  I digress….  But many do not know where my reference comes from.  Exodus 28:34

“33  Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all the way around the lower hem, with gold bells between them, 34so that goldbells and pomegranates alternate around the lower hem of the robe. 35 Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he enters or exits the sanctuary before the LORD, so that he will not die.…”

Angels

The Angel of the Lord is mentioned numerous times in the bible.  Angels are universal.  Everyone wants an angel watching out for them no matter what their religious background is.   And it is never mentioned in the bible that angels are sweet females or sexy girls with wings…look it up and you see a lot of that imagery on the web. Ugh!

Angels in the bible are male. Gabriel, Michael, Raphael to name a few.   But I do sculpt female and male images.  These particular angels give warnings, guidance and protection directed by God.  This is what I channel when making them.

 

The Small Sculpture Clay class we will be building a shrine shadow box with angel inside.  It will be a little more challenging….but just a little.

As you can see, there are several parts of the project that takes time to build from bottom up.  I will provide stamps, tools, cookie cutters and know how to achieve the outcome.
